In 2026, the nation will be celebrating the Route 66 Centennial ... the 100th anniversary of the Mother Road serving the traveling public!
Route 66 was one of the United States' first continuous stretches of paved highway, and served as a major path for those who migrated west.
"The Mother Road" was commissioned on November 11, 1926, and ultimately stretched 2,448 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles.
Many states and organizations are planning special events and tours to highlight the Centennial.
In addition, the Route 66 Centennial Commission Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by the President on December 23, 2020. The Act creates a commission that will recommend activities to commemorate the 100th anniversary of U.S. Route 66 in 2026. It will consist of representatives from each of the eight Route 66 states. Members will recommend the production of various written materials, films and documentaries to commemorate the history of Route 66.
Members of the Commission were announced by The White House on December 28, 2022.

Tesla is close to opening a 24-hour diner, drive-in theater and supercharger station along Route 66 in West Hollywood, California, reported Forbes magazine.
In a recent tweet, Tesla founder Elon Musk stated: “Our Tesla futuristic diner (Grease meets The Jetsons with Supercharging) in LA should be ready later this year.”
Forbes dug up more details:
While Tesla hasn’t divulged too many details about the project, the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety has issued several permits in recent months for the site and the documents divulge some details about what’s to come. First reported by Teslerati, a media site that reports on Musk’s ventures, the supercharging station at 7001 W. Santa Monica Blvd. will be open 24 hours, and outfitted with 32 supercharging stalls.
For those looking to get their kicks on route 66 in California, the hangout spot will also have a restaurant, a rooftop, a movie screen, and bamboo trees.
Musk initially announced the charger-diner plan about 2 1/2 years ago.
